Talk It Up!

Just like you talk about your newborns arrival to prepare your children to greet their new sibling, you should talk up your newborn session! This is one of the best ways to prepare siblings for a newborn session. It gets them excited to be in front of the camera and all dressed up! It is also a great way to prepare your children for the expectations of the day. You can explain what a professional camera looks like, what kind of props will be there and show them their newborn photos!

Practice Poses

If you have smaller children you may be nervous about your childing holding still. A great tip is to practice posing with your children to prepare them for a newborn session! Have them sit together with a baby doll and smile as you pretend to capture photos. If there are poses that you have seen and really love, you can have your children practice those specific poses. You can even turn this into a really fun game and practice smiles and silly faces. Make it fun for them so that they are excited for the real thing!

Pick Out Outfits

A really fun part of any newborn session is the outfits! You more than likely have an idea or vision for what color scheme and look you want to achieve. However, you want to consider giving your older children options for what to wear. Simply pick out two or three outfits that you like, and have your child choose which one they like best! You can even make their choice as simple as what shoes they get to wear for the newborn session.

Be Prepared

Before your newborn session make a check list of everything you will need, and lay it all out the night before. This will cause less stress for you and as a result, less stress for your children. Preparing siblings for a newborn session can seem stressful, but the more calm and excited your are for this event, the better! You children will pick up on your emotions and lean into them. By being prepared you will reduce stress and have a more enjoyable experience.

Bring Siblings Toys

Your newborn’s siblings will have plenty of down time when they are not in front of the camera. I always suggest bringing some books, toys and tablets for your children. This will keep them occupied for the time that they are not in front of the camera. I love this this tip because it will prepare sibling for a newborn session and the down time while at the studio.
